That was unfortunately my last concert with Bennie Pete as bandleader of the Hot 8 Brass Band. The horn section was still complete — they’d just swapped in two young musicians from New Orleans on drums, who stood right next to Bennie and took direction well. What really struck me again: the sheer dance power of this band. The whole crew drops all the way down, gets the entire crowd to do the same, pulls people on stage to dance along. That’s their gift — not just playing, but moving people.

After the show you could catch a smoke with Tyrus Chapman in front of the Hansa 39. No clue how that guy manages to be a toothless chain-smoker and still deliver killer Hot 8 sets.
