Sehr guter letzter Wiesn-Tag.

There are bands you’ve known about forever and have always wanted to see live. Today, I finally got to see Youngblood Brass Band—and on the very last day of Oktoberfest, of all days. There were about 100 people in the room, and the atmosphere was lovely. The guy at the merch table told me, “The drummer’s been at Oktoberfest since 10 this morning. Let’s see if he makes it through the show.” Spoiler: he did.

Three opening songs that hit hard right away. Exactly what you want. The arrangements and solo parts are fantastic: one of them plays something, the others play it back, and it all fits perfectly. The trumpet player pulls off one jaw-dropping solo after another. This is brass band music the way it should be: lock in, play it back, improvise—perfect. And that double percussion setup really brings the punch.

Then David made Nat introduce a song—which was super sweet, because Nat said David was his best friend and took care of everything in the band. But the real party moment came with “Gangsta’s Paradise,” a Stevie Wonder cover. That’s when the place really took off. The audience wanted it, the band promised it, and when they played “Brooklyn” as the final song, it was wild: the crowd didn’t shout “Encore!”—they started singing “Brooklyn” themselves, all “la la la,” just voices. I have no idea how you get 100 people to chant such complicated New Orleans rhythms in the style of “Seven Nation Army.” Amazing! A few guys in traditional Bavarian outfits, clearly straight from Oktoberfest, pulled it off. Nat came back out and conducted the crowd—brilliant. And of course, there was an encore.

A very good last day of Oktoberfest.
