Kurz vor dem Konzert hatte ich noch einen kleinen Einparkunfall. Polizei rufen, bla, hat alles ein bisschen l\u00e4nger gedauert, war aber nicht schlimm \u2014 und gefahren bin ich trotzdem. Runtergeholt hat mich dann die lange Schlange vorm Zenith: anstehen, Bier holen, mit Leuten quatschen. Keiner von denen hatte die Band jemals vorher gesehen. Die kommen ja auch aus Neuseeland, und es ist schon verr\u00fcckt, dass die diese Anreise machen und dann das Zenith f\u00fcllen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Es ging direkt los. Fat Freddy’s Drop haben einen mega Sound \u2014 eine richtige Dub Band, richtig richtig laut, geht richtig ab. Joe Dukie, der S\u00e4nger, ist dabei eigentlich recht unauff\u00e4llig, obwohl er so wichtig f\u00fcr die Band ist; der steht einfach an der Seite und singt fantastisch. Superauff\u00e4llig sind dagegen die beiden Blechbl\u00e4ser, Trompete und Posaune. Joe Lindsay tritt erst in einem wei\u00dfen Mantel auf, danach in wei\u00dfer Unterhose und Unterhemd mit Kapit\u00e4nsm\u00fctze, danach in einem rosa Paillettenoutfit. Sorgt f\u00fcr mega Stimmung und ist einfach witzig.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Und dann kommt MC Slave auf die B\u00fchne und man denkt sich erstmal, wer ist eigentlich dieser dicke Typ, den sie da hochgelassen haben. Der sorgt dann daf\u00fcr, dass die Stimmung nochmal steiler geht, weil MC Slave einfach ein richtig richtig guter MC ist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Man muss auch sagen: Die neuen Songs vom letzten Album<\/a> gehen schwer durch die Decke, man braucht eigentlich gar keine alten. „Blackbird“ ist nat\u00fcrlich trotzdem wahnsinnig cool \u2014 das habe ich nach dem Konzert drei Tage in Endlosschleife geh\u00f6rt, weil sie es so gut performen, auch als zehn Minuten langen Song.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leider mussten wir fr\u00fcher gehen. Aufgeregt hinfahren und dann nach vielleicht einer Stunde zwanzig, einer Stunde drei\u00dfig wieder raus aus einem so intensiven Konzert \u2014 schade. Trotzdem eine wahnsinnig gute Zeit, sehr genossen<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had a little parking bump on the way to this one. Calling the police, all that, took a while, nothing serious \u2014 and I drove on anyway. What actually calmed me down was the long queue outside the Zenith: standing in line, getting a beer, chatting to people. Not one of them had ever seen this band before. They are from New Zealand after all, and it’s pretty wild that they make that trip and then fill the Zenith.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Straight in from the first second. Fat Freddy’s Drop have a massive sound \u2014 a proper dub band, seriously loud, seriously going off. Joe Dukie, the singer, is actually fairly unassuming despite being so central to the band; he just stands off to the side and sings. What really stands out are the two horns, trumpet and trombone. Joe Lindsay comes out first in a white coat, then in white underpants and a vest with a captain’s hat, then in a pink sequin outfit. Gets the room going and is just funny.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then MC Slave walks on and your first thought is, who is this big guy they’ve let up there. And he cranks the whole thing up another notch, because MC Slave is just a really really good MC.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also worth saying: the new songs from the last album absolutely go off, you don’t really need the old ones. „Blackbird“ is still incredibly cool though \u2014 I had it on repeat for three days after the show, because they perform it that well, even stretched out to ten minutes.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sadly we had to leave early. Turning up wound-up and then walking out of a concert that intense after maybe an hour twenty, an hour thirty \u2014 shame. Still a brilliant time, really enjoyed it<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n \t\t\n\t\t\t\t
